Casualties of War

September 13, 2007

On August 19th, there was a controversial editorial in the New York Times (reprinted here) arguing for a change in the current Iraq strategy. The controversy stemmed from the fact that the editorial was co-written by seven soldiers currently serving in Iraq.

On September 10, two of the soldiers, Staff Sgt. Yance T. Gray and Sgt. Omar Mora, were killed in Iraq when their transport vehicle overturned in a highway accident west of Baghdad. A third co-writer, Staff Sgt. Jeremy A. Murphy, was shot in the head before the op-ed was published. He is currently recovering in a military hospital stateside.

Apolitically, I think it’s important that you read their op-ed. Even if you disagree, they have given their lives for our country. They deserve to be heard.

And before you make any kind of snap judgment about the the character of these soldiers, here is the last line of the opinion piece.

“We need not talk about morale. As committed soldiers, we will see this mission through.”
